Garden competition brings hands-on learning to children of Trinidad & Tobago

Food security continues to be a global issue and Trinidad and Tobago is not immune to the myriad of challenges associated with becoming a food-secure nation.

To help primary students better understand food production and food security, school gardens provide hands-on opportunities for them to explore these concepts and make the learning experience more meaningful for all involved.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Nutrien sponsored I-EAT 2023, a school garden competition encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship and skill development in agriculture at the primary school level. Over 1,500 students from 55 schools in Trinidad participated in the competition in commemoration of World Food Day on October 16, 2023.

"Today’s youth are tomorrow’s decision-makers and agriculture advocates, and they play a crucial role in a healthy future for our industry and our planet,” says Erik Vettergren, Managing Director, Trinidad Nitrogen. “I feel confident that the participants of this contest, and their hard work, will contribute to Feeding the Future.”

“We’re proud to support the I-EAT program which builds genuine connection and sustainable results in our community,” says Josanne Basanoo, Coordinator, Model Farm Operations. “This is a great example of how Nutrien strives to make a positive impact not only globally, but at the local level too.”
