Fill The Plate: Nutrien Partners with Saskatoon Community to Double Impact of Food Donations

As a global leader in agriculture with more than 65 years of history in Saskatchewan and six potash mines in the province, Nutrien’s commitment to food security is felt at home in Saskatoon, Canada and across the globe. Our enduring partnership with the Friendship Inn is one way we help nourish people and strengthen communities where we live and work.

The Friendship Inn: A Lifeline for Saskatoon

Every year, the Friendship Inn in Saskatoon serves as a lifeline for thousands, providing daily free meals to community members facing food insecurity. With demand rising, the Inn expects to serve nearly half a million meals this year in a city of over 300,000 people. The annual Fill the Plate campaign, running throughout December, is vital to sustaining this essential service.

Doubling Impact Together

For the thirteenth consecutive year, Nutrien is proud to match community donations up to $125,000, doubling the impact of every dollar given. Just $5 provides a nourishing meal, and during the campaign, each donation goes twice as far to help the Inn reach its ambitious goal of 200,000 meals.

“Nutrien is committed to feeding the future and strengthening the communities around us,” says Jeff Holzman, SVP Investor Relations & FP&A. “The Friendship Inn’s Fill the Plate campaign supports an essential service that offers nourishment, dignity, and connection for individuals and families in need all year long. Let’s address food security challenges together – please join us in donating to help make 200,000 meals possible.”

A Collective Effort to Make a Difference

The Friendship Inn relies on fundraising to meet 95% of its operating budget, making community support and partnerships like Nutrien’s crucial.

“Nutrien has been a key partner for 13 years, and we are grateful for their dedication to addressing food security for our city’s most vulnerable citizens,” says Ashala Jacobson, Board Chair.“My hope is to see everyone inspired by Nutrien’s generosity and encouraged to give as well, so the Inn can keep serving our neighbours with food and friendship. No one should be hungry.”

Volunteer Time: Value Beyond Dollars

Nutrien’s commitment goes beyond financial support. Grow Our Community employee volunteers, easily recognized in their green shirts and aprons, are a familiar and welcome sight at the Friendship Inn, regularly helping with food preparation and serving meals. In 2024, employees contributed 180 hours of volunteering here. Their warm smiles and dedication reflect Nutrien’s values in action, making a tangible difference for those facing hunger and supporting a greater purpose of a food secure future. The presence of these volunteers, and all who give their time, is a powerful reminder that community is built by people who strengthen the places where we live and work, every day.

How to Give to Fill The Plate

Donations to Fill the Plate can be made throughout December at www.friendshipinn.ca, by phone (306-242-3979), e-transfer to donate@friendshipinn.ca, or in person at the Friendship Inn. Charitable tax receipts are available.

Nutrien Supports Food Security across Saskatchewan

Nutrien’s support for food security extends beyond the Friendship Inn. This holiday season, we’ve also provided a $250,000 lead gift to the Food Banks of Saskatchewan’s Feeding Holiday Cheer campaign, which aims to raise $2 million to support 36 food banks across the province. Together with community partners, we’re working to ensure that families have access to nutritious food, not just during the holidays, but all year long.

Also, set to open in the spring of 2027, a new home for the Saskatoon Food Bank, fueled by Nutrien. Read the full story here: Breaking Ground: A New Home for the Saskatoon Food Bank, Fueled by Nutrien | Nutrien
