Nutrien Ag Solutions joins USDA-funded climate-smart project
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced a list of projects to receive funding from the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities program – and Nutrien Ag Solutions is a key partner in one of these projects.
The Climate-Smart Agriculture Innovative Finance Initiative, led by Field to Market, aims to leverage the private sector demand to strengthen markets for climate-smart commodities using innovative finance mechanisms to accelerate the adoption of regenerative practices by growers.
How we’re contributing
Nutrien Ag Solutions has been partners with Field to Market for over five years. Sarah Fox, Director of Strategic Partnerships, also sits on the board for the organization. As one of several collaborators on this initiative, we are supporting by:
- Providing guidance to corn, cotton and wheat growers to decrease their nitrous oxide emissions through sustainable ag practices.
- Demonstrating innovative financial mechanisms and performance-based incentives to support farmers in reducing the agronomic and financial risk of scaling climate-smart agriculture practices.
- Helping with data collection, measurement and analysis for growers participating in the project.
“When you see how many people are collaborating as a result of USDA’s program, it’s amazing to see the silos breaking down so everyone can come together and work on the broader goal of developing climate-smart commodities,” says Sarah Fox. “We’re excited to be supporting Field to Market and to collaborate on providing ways to derisk the practice adoption process for growers.”
More about the USDA program
The USDA invested $2.8 billion into the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities to distribute among 70 projects that contribute toward the program’s goal of growing crops produced through climate-smart practices. There will be a second round of funding and projects announced in late 2022.
“Having the US government put money behind projects encouraging the sustainable production of commodities is a significant endorsement of how important sustainable ag practices are,” says Jeff Tarsi, EVP and President of Global Retail. “Nutrien Ag Solutions is here and ready to scale our services to support our growers and partners as the interest in adopting these practices continues to increase.”
