Caring for our contractors

At Nutrien, everyone is a safety leader, including our contractors.

In 2022, contractors accounted for 27 percent of hours worked at Nutrien – that’s nearly 16,000,000 hours.

The vision of our safety culture is to send everyone who enters our facilities home safe, every day. That’s why, earlier this year, our Phosphate leadership hosted an event focused on contractor safety performance at Nutrien. The group celebrated a decrease in Phosphate contractor recordables last year and collaboratively discussed how to make improvements going forward.

Mike Dirham, Vice President of Phosphate Operations, shares his expectations when it comes to safety.

“Our leaders must be good safety role models and clearly communicate the key daily actions of The Nutrien Way to help prevent serious injuries and fatalities (SIF) and create a psychologically safe workplace where it’s encouraged to stop work when unsafe, report incidents and share lessons learned,” he says. “We have high expectations because safety is the most important thing we do, and everyone, including our contractor partners, has a part to play in keeping our people and operations safe.”

The safety performance at our Phosphate sites has been improving, thanks to our employees’ and contractors’ strong focus on SIF prevention and positive collaboration.

“I’m proud of everyone at our sites for prioritizing and upholding Nutrien’s core value of safety,” says Dyan Nelson, Senior Director, Global Health, Wellness & Phosphate Safety. “This year, we’re continuing to work collaboratively with our contractor partners to improve the safety performance at our Phosphate sites by developing safety improvement plans, implementing new safety initiatives and providing leadership coaching for safety engagement workshops.”
